There has been a lot of talk about which is better at scoring goals – Luis Suarez or Robert Lewendowski? The Argentine has been linked with a move to Spanish giants Barcelona after reportedly breaking promises to the club. Meanwhile, Liverpool striker Sadio Mane has been linked with a move to Manchester City after missing a series of training sessions. The two strikers have both scored more than 50 goals in a single season, but who is better at scoring goals?
Robert Lewandowski is a better goal scorer than Luis Suarez
Although both players have scored numerous goals, Lewandowski is arguably a better finisher. He has scored goals with his head and left foot, and he has done so from inside and outside of the box, too. In fact, in a single match against Wolfsburg, Lewandowski netted five goals. Suarez, on the other hand, managed to score only four goals in nine minutes. Both players have won a Champions League medal. But, it’s not as clear cut as it looks.
While Suarez has won one champions league title, Lewandowski has appeared in two. The first was with Borussia Dortmund, where he scored four goals. Lewandowski also won the 2014 World Cup, and his goal scoring was better than Suarez’s. In total, Lewandowski has won four Champions Leagues and one Super Cup.
Unlike Suarez, Lewandowski has humble origins. He began his career at Znicz Pruszkow in Poland, and then progressed to Lech Poznan. At 22, Lewandowski transferred to Borussia Dortmund. It took him a year to settle at Dortmund, and he joined Bayern Munich two years later. His swagger and quality on the field is matched by the quiet personality off the pitch.
Both players can score goals, but the former is better at dribbling and finishing. He scored five goals in nine minutes against Wolfsburg in 2015, and these goals are among his best. And, his flying volley is undoubtedly the most visually pleasing. But, while Lewandowski is a better finisher, Suarez is still a better overall player.
Suarez is in talks to join Argentine giants Barcelona
Luis Suarez, a disgraced Liverpool striker, is reportedly in talks to join the Spanish side, with Lionel Messi also supporting the move. The former Uruguay international was recently banned by FIFA for four months after biting Italian footballer Giorgio Chiellini at the World Cup final. Barcelona are under huge financial pressure and would not have been able to meet the regulations of LaLiga’s financial fair play if they had kept him.
Despite the financial constraints of his current club, River Plate are interested in signing the Uruguay striker. In fact, officials from the Argentine club met Suarez in Paris recently and are willing to pay him over PS4million a year. While he is keen to remain in Europe before the World Cup in Qatar, the winger has not ruled out a return to South America. Moreover, River Plate are in need of a new striker this summer. The club are set to lose wonderkid Julian Alvarez to Manchester City.
The Argentine striker has already ruled out a move to Arsenal. The club are attempting to sell the striker, who has won the European Golden Shoe twice. Having said that, Barca could release Suarez to other clubs for around EUR14m (£11m), PS13m ($16m) or $17m. Barca, however, have suffered from financial difficulties due to the coronavirus pandemic. As a result, Barcelona are already plotting the replacement for Suarez, Lautaro Martinez. He would be the partner of Lionel Messi, who has confirmed he will stay at the club.
Juventus are reportedly in the running for Suarez’s signature. The Argentine has been linked with a move to the Italian side for months now, and is expected to sign a three-year contract with the Serie A club. Juventus will pay Barcelona EUR10 million (£10 million) in exchange for his services. Suarez will also take a language test in the coming days, which is crucial in order to acquire a passport. The striker is currently in his final year of contract at the Camp Nou, and if he plays more than 60% of the season for Barcelona, his contract will automatically be renewed.
Liverpool were keen to keep Suarez, but the Argentine’s ban has prevented them from selling the Footballer of the Year. Earlier this week, Liverpool’s chief executive Ian Ayre opened talks with a representative of Barcelona in London. The deal is expected to last five years, and the Argentine giants will not sign Suarez until after the third biting incident.
Mane’s future at Liverpool
The recent transfer rumours surrounding Sadio Mane have fueled speculation about his future at the Reds. The Senegal international has been linked with a move to Bayern Munich after revealing his desire to leave Liverpool. The Argentine has recently said he would “bow to the wishes of the Senegalese people”. However, the player has since backed off from his comments.
Bayern Munich have made a PS25m bid for Sadio Mane but the Reds have turned down the offer. The striker is thought to be worth PS40m and could be a replacement for Philippe Coutinho. However, if he does leave the club, it will be an unwise move. Mane has proven himself in every position for Liverpool.
Despite this, Didi can provide Liverpool with an invaluable scouting report on the striker. The club have been facing striking issues this season after Daniel Sturridge was injured. If Liverpool want to replace Luis Suarez, Robert Lewandowski could be a solution to this problem. It’s also worth remembering that Lewandowski has a better kicking technique than Suarez.
The Uruguayan is not expected to leave Liverpool until the end of August, which means he’s unlikely to be able to leave in the summer. Despite these factors, the club are unlikely to accept offers lower than PS50 million. Liverpool have also been open to offers for Lewandowski in the past but have been reluctant to accept such bids. But Brendan Rodgers expects his player to sign a new contract and is unlikely to consider any offers below PS50 million.
Nunez, the 22-year-old Benfica talisman, has been linked with a move to Liverpool. His performances in the first leg against Liverpool have won Jurgen Klopp’s approval. Despite the uncertainty surrounding the deal, Nunez’s name has been linked with a move to Liverpool. Nunez is set to sign a six-year contract after the June 13 medical.
