For this deal to work, Atletico Madrid will have to sell some of their players. They will have to sell one or more of their star players to clear their balance sheets and navigate the Financial Fair Play regulations. They could sell Thomas Lemar or Saul Niguez to raise the money to complete the deal. Ronaldo is prepared to take a 30% pay cut to leave the club. He could also be sold for millions of euros.

Asked about this report, United boss Erik ten Hag said: “The rumours that Atletico Madrid have a plan to sign Cristiano are completely unfounded.” But he also denied any knowledge that he is interested in leaving United. However, the club’s new head coach Erik Ten Hag has been aware of Ronaldo’s intentions. However, the manager remains hopeful of his availability this season.
