Assassination of Martin Luther King Jr.
The Assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. prompted a federal investigation. The alleged shooter, James Earl Ray, was accused of assassinating Dr. King on April 4, 1968. The FBI reportedly has no proof of guilt. The FBI’s post-assassination investigation also showed major flaws. However, a Senate committee found no evidence to support Ray’s accusation, and affirmed that King was shot by his killer, James Earl Ray.
Asked to give an account of the events surrounding the assassination, King’s secretary, Grace Walden, gave conflicting stories. The first version states that she did not see the man who exited the restroom shortly after Dr. King was shot. In fact, she told investigators that she saw no man in that bathroom. The second version states that she did see a man. Both accounts are false. Despite being a witness to the crime, Walden was systematically excluded from journalistic coverage and her testimony was never recorded.
In addition to being a civil rights icon, King’s death also inspired a civil rights lawsuit. The King family’s civil lawsuit successfully held local, state, and federal government responsible for King’s death. It is the only murder case to have resulted in such a verdict. King’s assassination in Memphis, Tennessee, on April 4, 1968, sparked major riots in African American neighborhoods in over one hundred cities.
